E. Verbs taking an indirect quotation do not take verb-suffix le了.

 

5.1     Tā shuō(x) tā yǐjīng bìyè sān nián le. 

他说他已经毕业三年了。

He said that it had been three years since he graduated.

 

5.2     Tā wèn(x) wǒ chī fàn le méi yǒu. 

          他问我吃饭了没有。

          He asked me if I had eaten.
