VIII. Stative verb as the complement

 

Only stative verbs and verbs can be used as resultative complements.

 

Stative verbs, such as duìcorrect, cuòwrong, hǎogood, huàibroken, bǎofull, qīngchu清楚clear, etc, can be used as resultative complements. Most stative verbs are monosyllabic, only a few are disyllabic. These stative verbs are suffixed to verbs to emphasize different resultative aspects of the action.

 

-duìcorrect

 

1. huídáduì 回答        answer correctly

2. cāiduì                  guess correctly

3. shuōduì               speak correctly

4. xiěduì                  write correctly

5. zuòduì                 do correctly

etc.

 

Example:    huídáduì回答(huídá回答to answer + duìcorrect): answer correctly

 

Nèixiē wèntí dōu huídáduì le. 

那些问题她都回答对了。

She answered all of the questions correctly.

 

-cuòincorrect, wrong

 

1. huídácuò 回答        answer incorrectly

2. cāicuò                 guess incorrectly

3. shuōcuò               speak/say incorrectly

4. xiěcuò                  write incorrectly

5. kàncuò                see/read incorrectly

6. tīngcuò                hear incorrectly

7. zuòcuò                 do incorrectly

etc.

 

Example:    xiěcuò(xiěto write + cuòinccorect): write incorrectly

 

Zhèi ge xiěcuò le. Yīnggāi xiětiān’, kěshì xiě de shì.  

这个字你写错了。应该写,可是你写的是

You wrote this character incorrectly. You should have written tiān, but you wrote instead.

 

-hǎoachieve completion/achieve an adequate result

 

1. zuòhǎo                done; finish doing

2. zhǔnbèihǎo准备     finish preparing

3. xiěhǎo                 finish writing

4. xiūhǎo                 fixed; repaired

5. xuéhǎo                study well

6. shuìhǎo               sleep well

etc.

 

Example 1: zuòhǎo         (zuòto do/to cook + hǎodone) done; finish doing

 

Wǎnfàn zuòhǎo le. 

晚饭做好了。

Dinner is ready.

 

Example 2: xiūhǎo         (xiūfix/repair + hǎogood): fixed; repaired

-de chē hái méi xiūhǎo ne.  

我的车还没修好呢。

My car is not yet fixed.

 

Example 3: shuìhǎo(shuìsleep + hǎowell): sleep well

Zuótiān wǎnshàng méi shuìhǎo jiào, suǒyǐ jīntiān juéde hěn lèi.  

昨天晚上我没睡好觉,所以今天觉得很累。

Last night I did not sleep well, so I feel tired today.

 

-huàibad; broken

 

nònghuài                break; cause something to break

 

Example:    nònghuài(nòngto cause + huàibroken): break

 

-de diànnǎo nònghuài le.  

他把我的电脑弄坏了。

He broke my computer.

 

-bǎofull (often suffixed to chī)

 

chībǎo                     full (as a result of eating)

 

Example:    chībǎo (chīeat + bǎofull): full as a result of eating

 

chībǎo le, néng zài chī le.  

我吃饱了,不能再吃了。

I’m full, I can’t eat any more.

 

-qīngchu清楚 clear

 

1. kànqīngchu清楚    see clearly

2. tīngqīngchu清楚    hear clearly

3. shuōqīngchu清楚   speak clearly

4. xiěqīngchu清楚      write clearly

etc.

 

Example:    tīngqīngchu清楚(tīnglisten + qīngchu清楚clear) hear clearly

 

Duìbùqǐ, méi tīngqīngchu. Qǐng zài shuō biàn.  

对不起,我没听清楚,请再说一遍。
